A hypotonic solution is a solution whose solute concentration is lower than that of a cell that is in the solution.

Explanation:

If a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution, it begins to swell up, as waters enters the cell, and if too much water enters the cell, it is going to burst.In a hypotonic solution, there is less solute concentration than that of the cell, and so there is more water concentration than the cell. Through osmosis, water will move down a concentration gradient, and will therefore move into the cell, to create an equilibrium between water molecules.A picture of this event can be seen here:
